Mystical Unicorns | a 5th Birthday Party

4.11.2016

Time sure flies when you're raising kids. My daughter is now almost 6.  But here at long last I'm back to share her 5th birthday party, because unicorns are always a good idea.  This was a small and simple backyard party, with bright cheerful color and some easy handmade touches.  You can find the invitation and most of the graphics in my shop, and the rest is detailed below.

The world's cutest plush unicorns came from the Land of Nod and were the party favors, along with bags for the unicorn pinata treats.  The other unicorns were all sprayed gold... and you may notice that I got a little liberal with the spray paint and sprayed the tops of the balloons gold too.  You can't see much of the effect in the photos but I highly recommend trying this- they looked awesome.

For party activities, the girls first beaded their own rainbow necklaces and had their faces painted.  Then after a (mystic) pizza lunch we had them design their own unicorn horns.  The 'horns' were chocolate cupcakes baked inside ice cream cones and they got to frost them and decorate with chocolate stars, sprinkles and twizzlers.  It was a super fun ridiculous mess!

We also had a game of pin the horn on the unicorn - on a poster I printed using the invitation design. And last but not least of course... the pinata, filled with sparkles, tiny rubber unicorns and an abundance of pink and purple candy.

As you can see, the girls had a blast. Though clearly having the streamers as a photo backdrop backfired on me... they doubled as a hiding place for those pretty faces.  Also, one final tip for you. I used a roll of recycled art paper to make the brush painted table covers, and not only did they add fun color, but they made for the easiest clean up ever.  See? Small and simple, as most of my favorite parties are these days.

A Rainy Day Rainbow Party

12.06.2011
A rainy day in Rome didn't stop the colors from shining through on Camilla's 8th birthday.  This vibrant redhead was resolute on a rainbow party, so she and her mother pulled it off at the park, in spite of the inclement weather.  The decorations and sweets were kept homemade and simple... Camilla even painted the crayon rainbow that decorates party invitations herself.  Outdoor party games like a traditional sack race kept guests laughing and entertained... clearly the rain couldn't put a damper on this charming little birthday.

Polka Dot Zoo Birthday with Vintage Details

10.06.2011
I love the creativity behind this vintage zoo party from Annelise of Aesthetic Nest.  She took her daughter's 5th birthday inspiration from the zoos of a century ago, and incorporated polka dots and rick rack to add more of a lighthearted, vintage feel.  She also designed these charming printables herself... check them out in her etsy shop and read on below for more party details.

From Annelise: I wanted to share with you my daughter’s fifth birthday party—a vintage polka dot zoo party in coral, yellow and grey with some rickrack thrown in. I wanted to evoke the awe and naiveté of the zoos of yesteryear: parks and wrought iron and nearly-domesticated, exotic wild animals! My children love the zoo, not just for the animals but the cotton candy and carousel too!  I hosted a luncheon in my backyard on tables set with tablecloths I made—grey and white polka dots and stripes trimmed in rickrack and used rickrack placemats and napkins too. I served kid friendly food: PB&J, jello cut in animal shapes, fruit, fiddle faddle, and of course, birthday cake. Favors were zoo pails filled with train whistles (for our zoo train ride), snacks and water bottles.  And after lunch was a trip to the zoo!  The fabrics are my favorite thing about this party—a darling Michael Miller “Kid Zoo” and polka dot. It was fun using them on outfits for my girl as well as table dressings. I also had fun with the printables including pennants for bunting, patterned papers, accordion invitations and cupcake toppers.

Little Handcrafted Super-Girls

8.18.2011
Mom Kristen of Simply Grove crafted this simple backyard princess/superhero party for her five year old Eden and her friends, complete with handmade masks, capes and a nail polish booth.  I love that she celebrates her daughter's eclectic personality... as she says, Eden is the perfect mix of tom boy and girly girl. This sweet party is a heartwarming tribute.
